Member of the House of Lords stands up against the schools bill
" Being honest, who would have thought, I just bumped into a demonstration outside the Department for Education. There are some orthodox Jewish citizens of this country who are completely correctly making the point that the Schools Bill is a threat to home schooling and their signs are interesting as they say, “No to state indoctrination”. In fact, we have got a session at the ‘battle of ideas’ on whether the schools are indoctrinating our kids or not. It also says that “The oppressive Schools Bill” – I am just reading a banner here – “undermines freedom of religion”. That one has got a big union jack on the side of it. This just shows you. And actually, we have got a session on the importance of freedom of religion.
Now, regardless of whether I agree with these good folk who are here making their points and exhibiting their rights of protest perfectly reasonably in a democracy, I don’t agree with them on many things, but they are right that there are dangerous trends attacking religious freedom and there are dangerous trends in the Schools Bill, and in fact in education in general, which means that parental authority is being undermined.
So, I say, good luck to them. I hope the Department for Education - where we are standing outside – take notice, and I’ll certainly be citing them the next time we discuss the Schools Bill in the House of Lords."
